Ornamental Features:

Ludisia discolor are tropical terrestrial orchids that have reddish brown leaves with pale red veins on the surface and red undersides.  This species is native to Burma and flowers in the winter.  The flowers are white with a large yellow anther.

 

Applications:

These plants are suited for shaded landscapes in warm climates.  They can also be used as an indoor pot plant or summer patio plant in cooler areas.

 

Pot Size and Finish Time:

Best suited for a 6” pot size and will finish in about 6 months.

 

Culture:

Light:  80% shade

Temperature:   75° - 90° F

Soil / Watering:  Use a well draining professional mix, keep evenly moist but not damp. Plants will tolerate some drying.

Fertilizer:  Liquid feed with complete fertilizer at 100-125 ppm (N). For top dress or soil incorporation, follow label rates for low to medium feeders.

 

Pest/Disease Problems:

Employ good sanitation practices to avoid fungal and bacterial pathogens. A preventative drench with a soil fungicide will help to prevent root rot.
